What Do I Do About Wisdom Teeth Stitches?

Wisdom teeth extraction is a common treatment, so you might not have thought much about your upcoming appointment. That is, until you realized a very important detail: you’ll have stitches. How does that work when they’re in the back of your mouth?

Caring for oral sutures is a bit different than ones you may have had on your skin. But the basic principles are the same – you’ll want to be careful and gentle! For more details on what that will look like, keep reading.

Removing Wisdom Teeth Sutures

This has less to do with direct care, but you’re probably wondering what will happen to your extraction stitches when you no longer need them. Truthfully, it depends on your dentist and the nature of your treatment. There are two possibilities:

  • Natural dissolve: your dentist might use sutures that will dissolve over time. There’s not much you’ll have to do in this situation – just contact your dentist if they don’t fade within the estimated timeline.
  • Manual removal: your dentist might use more traditional sutures that will have to be removed manually. In this case, they’ll let you know when you need to return to the office so they can be taken out.

Your dentist will go over the specifics of your wisdom teeth stitches, but if the topic is weighing on your mind, don’t hesitate to ask which method they plan on using!

How To Care for Stitches in The Meantime

While you wait for your sutures to dissolve or be removed, follow these general tips to avoid tearing them:

  • 24 hours after extraction, slowly rinse your mouth with soothing salt water. Let the water fall from your mouth instead of forcing it out, otherwise you could harm your sutures.
  • Antibacterial rinses can reduce your risk of infection but double-check with your dentist to make sure it’s right for your mouth.
  • Don’t skip your brushing and flossing routines but do skip over the extraction areas. After about three to seven days, it’s typically safe and recommended to clean these sites.

Keep in mind that wisdom teeth extraction is a little different for everyone. Your dentist will tell you how best to be gentle with your stitches, and it’s important to stick to these aftercare instructions.

How NOT To Care for Stitches

Certain tasks are more straining on your oral region than you might think. Here’s a list of things that could cause problems:

  • Using straws
  • Spitting
  • Hot liquids and tough foods
  • Smoking
  • Alcohol
  • Physical activity

Remember that wisdom teeth stitches are part of the healing process. If they look strange or start coming loose, something could be amiss near your extraction site. It’s important to listen to your dentist’s aftercare instructions, and it’s also important to communicate any abnormalities you notice! Otherwise, sit back, relax, and enjoy a peaceful recovery.
